Friend of the Court Association History

By Suzanne Hollyer, Director, Oakland County Friend of the Court, and President, Friend of the Court Association

The Friend of the Court Association (FOCA) just celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the Friend of the Court. This landmark anniversary caused association members to take a look back into our history.

The first meeting to organize such an association was held on September 1, 1931, at the Olds Hotel in Lansing. Phillip C. Kelly, Friend of the Court in Jackson County, had sent letters to all Friends of the Court inviting them to the meeting.

On that day, the Friends decided on a motion by Edward Pokorny, the first Friend of the Court, that the organization’s purpose would be: “To further the interests of all children of divorced parents; to further beneficial legislation; to bring about better co-operation between Friends of the Courts of the different counties of the state for the exchange of ideas and for the betterment of their work.” Annual membership dues were established at $2.00. The constitution and by-laws were adopted at the following annual meeting, on September 7, 1932.

With the help of some retired former Friend of the Court Association presidents and the staff of the State Court Administrative Office, the association was able to identify most of the past presidents of the association. We continue to work on identifying the counties associated with some of these names.  Additionally, we are open to corrections as the records were not always clear.
